My Dream Boat, A 25ft Chris Craft Sportsman.

I saw my first 25 ft sportsman in Clayton NY. She was absolutely stunning. At first I past by her, but the more I went by, the more the boat made sense. Then at the Smith Mountain Lake show, one was parked next to me. Same thing. mmmm this is a very nice boat, it also had a new modern motor...mmm I kinda like that as well. Now I found this one at Mahogany Bay. I am hooked. Yeah a U22 is more realistic, but this is my new dream boat. Were I live is bigger water. And the 25 footer has all the goodies, and the size to make it all easy peezy. The lines and extra seats also make it perfect for a fun day on the water. Also there is a subtitle softness to the lines. The real question is, since restored ones are all around 100K, have they come down in value as well? I imagine so. 25 feet is a lot of restoration work! mmmm my Barrel back for a 25 ft sportsman.

Woody Kayaks! Toquenatch Creek Kayaks, For Gods Sake Don't Ask Me How To Pronounce That!

OK, this is slightly off subject. We got a comment from fellow Woody Boater Richard Gambino saying why not a story on Woody Kayaks? He had just been out Kayaking while the weather was very cold and loved it. To each his own I supose. So I started looking around. There are a ton of kit boats out there, but one place kept coming up that had the WOW factor. Here ya go. Toquenatch Creek Kayaks. Simply amazing! Art that floats..mmm were have I heard that before? Dang it, now I have to get me one of these. I am so out of space in the barn.... maybe I can hang it over the kitchen table... My wife won't mind. I"ll have custom made little frilly things on it... I know I'll name it after her....... That'll make 5 boats now named Suzy......

Sorry, It's Bragg'n Time In WoodyBoaterville!

WOW. Just 6 months ago we here at WoodyBoater were bragging about 10,000 page views in total. Now we are getting over that each month. Traffic is way up. Looks like we are getting close to over 70,000 visitors a year. Making us the largest daily publication on Antique & Classic Boats. We also reach folks anywhere there is a computer. And that is every were. We are also proud to say that this publication has the most typos of any other publication in history. A proud moment indeed. The number one thing now folks are clicking on is Just boats, and babes. mmmmmm that must be a disappointing click, when you see a babe old enough to be your grandmother... We also two ago days broke a record amount of readers on Robert Dupron's restoration. with over 600 page views in one day. So what does this all mean......? Nothing... I just did not have anything to write about today. Thanks to all the readers, and especially the comments. That part makes this very fun. Matt

Need An Antique Boat Fix? How Bout a 1936 Chris-Craft Special Race Boat!

Just got through scraping 1/2 inch of ice from my car. Today, cars will be wrecked, arms, legs and hips will be broken. And in 3 hrs all the ice will be gone! 40 degrees. That is the charm of living in the mid Atlantic region. No deep snow to play in. Just ice... ugh! So, I am inviting you all to go on a little trip to summerville. Thanks to the folks at Wooden Runabout Company we can just sit and for 3 minutes and 7 seconds leave this season zone... Wooohooo, we are woody boating... Crank it up! If you want even more of a fix, click here for there blog and the info on the boat.

The Magnificent Restoration Of Robert DaPron's 24' 1928 Chris Craft Model 3

Ohhhhhh that workshop is perfect. Do you think heaven has an epoxied floor?
Thanks to the wonderful craftsmanship of fellow WoodyBoater Robert DaPron and his photo take'n skills we now can enjoy a complete restoration of his personal 1928 Chris Craft. This online book that you can see here....Click Here... is a wonderful journey that makes it all look so simple... For the record, it's not. The attention to detail is wonderful. I met Robert and his side kicks at Lake Dora last year. They made it all the way from Washington State. Robert does restorations one at a time, one man at a time. He can be reached at DaPron Marine Restorations. No web site.. Just an email. rdapron@prodigy.net .. to quote him "if anybody has question that I can answer (no guarantee, there is a ton I don't know)".. HA, welcome to the club. It's refreshing to at least have someone admit it. Funny thing, there are a ton of experts out there... But after one look at his book, it reminds me of an old saying. One picture is worth a thousand words. Way to go Robert.

Absolute Classics Marine. My eBay Foe, Deserves A Plug!

As you may have read last week, while trying to sell my Barrel Back, another popped up on eBay. I made fun of it, and tried to use it to sell mine. I was actually very happy to see it there. The two boats could not have been more different. One a "before", the other an "after". The other thing that I was happy about was finding Absolute Classics Marine. Since I am not on the west coast that much any more, and for sure not in British Columbia, I have little knowledge of the good restorers and brokerage dealers out there. But that is the magic of the web and using eBay as a marketing tool. After looking at there site, and speaking with fellow WoodyBoaters out there, Absolute Classics Marine became an even better find. The reviews could not have been more glowing. Very honest, and with an amazing amount of integrity. So if you are out there, stop by, take pictures, heck... buy a boat... Just not that Barrel Back... I hear there's a great deal on a finished one!

Saved By The Bell! Again...

No I am not talking about some teen TV show. So those of you reading this under the age of 15. Sorry. Quick! click away, it's going to read like blah blah from your parents.... Runnnnnn!

We are talking about the new issue of the Brass Bell.

Just when the world is going dark and cold, with not a woody boat in site. Just slow paying clients and "cash pouring out like a fire hose" as a good pal of mine said. Nothing selling, and no weekend to go boating... And then it happens. Like the Publishers clearing house at your doorstep. The new issue of the Brass Bell arrives. This issue is the best yet. I know, I know...I keep saying that. But its true. Bill Basler is an amazing asset to the hobby and the Chris Craft Antique Boat Club. Also... The photography of Don Ayers.....Who would have thought that a machine of factoids could shoot such deep and emotional photo's. I was, and am blown away. The center fold shot of a 1965 26 foot Continental Sedan is breathtaking... It actually makes you want to buy a 26ft Continental Sedan. And no, I am not going to show you the shot. You need to join the club and get this amazing publication yourself. My latest issue of Classic Boating came as well two weeks ago. It's also a very nice publication, with a great note at the beginning about not cutting back on quality due to the economy, I aplaud that, and the complete focus on printed matter. Not a pixle of online anything from those guys. The more I think about it, the more I respect that. With that said though, there is an emotion that the Brass Bell design captures. Like no other publication. You FEEL like you have been at a boat show, or on a ride. Not just looking at a photo of one. And that is what is the saving grace of the Bell.. You truly get your fix... Now, all I ask is that you do a scatch and sniff of burnt oil, with a slight hint of gas, and varnish, and I will be in heaven...

Saddam's Yacht! For The Man That Had It All...They're Ready To Deal Deal Deal!

OK I felt bad when my Chris Craft did not sell. Or the Trojan Hot Shot... Maybe it was me, the way I wrote the ad... Maybe it was eBay... Maybe not! According to several Media outlets.... Now including WoodyBoater... Woohooo, we are a media outlet...... Here it is! Saddam's Yacht... They can't sell it. Not even for the fire sale price of $30 million. It would take $150 million today to build it.. So I don't feel so bad about my restoration after all... But then again, I did not build the optional pre war missile launcher like this yacht has... Or... yes.... the escape hatch to a submarine... Ohhhhhhh! Dang! I got to have one of those... Dr Evil...your yacht is at pier 6! And we must not pass over the Arabesque Decor of gold and blue deep pile carpet... mmmmmmm... Just think how impressed Thelma will be as you pull up to the "Bait and Steak" dock for some beer and worms.

Only 2 Months til Lake Dora FLA. Let'ss Get Readyyy To Varnish..

Despite the bad economy this years Lake Dora Classic boat show is expecting record crowds. More sponsors have asked to be involved, hotels are filling up fast and the buzz has started. Here at WoodyBoater we plan on being there reporting live from the Chris Craft tent. So stop by and say hi! Or sit like a lump on a log at watch on the web! This year. Video.... The following is a letter from Terry Fiest for there Sheerline newsletter. It gives you an idea of what is underway. Very cool stuff indeed.

The 2009 Sunnyland Antique Boat Festival in Tavares

On behalf of the Sunnyland Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society, I would like to welcome all of you to our annual show here at Wooten Park in Tavares. As most of you know, we took a chance last year and moved our show from Mount Dora to Tavares. This move afforded us an opportunity to accommodate the large crowds and grow the show. Our move paid off and this year, in spite of the poor economy, we are expecting a record crowd. The Classic Race Boat Association (CRA) will host their event the week prior to ours and when you combine the North and South Bound River Cruises on the St Johns, the CRA event and are spectacular event, you are afforded three weeks of vintage boating.

This year we are featuring Riva boats and the Riva Historical Society and the Chris Craft Antique Boat Club have a special relationship. Invitations have been extended to Carlos Riva and Chris Smith to attend.
In addition, Hagerty Classic Marine Insurance is celebrating 25 years of service to Classic Boaters and Hagerty will sponsor a reception on Thursday night Mar 26 to recognize all the Riva and Chris Craft owners. This reception will be held at the Lake Side Inn at Mount Dora.

The popularity of our show continues to build and this year we will move the set up day to Wednesday to afford us an opportunity to use Thursday as a show day. Another change this year, we have moved the traditional Picnic to Thursday. This will afford the spectators an opportunity to view all the boats on Friday and Saturday.

One of the success’s of our show is our Corporate Sponsorship Program and each year we have more sponsors who want to participate and be part of the great event. We provide all the sponsors an exhibition area and we include them in all facets of the show. Our Corporate Sponsors are listed separately in the Sheerline and with out them we could not continue to sustain the show. We will have our famous “Captains Party” Friday night on the street in front of the Lake Side Inn and we will have our Casual Saturday Night Banquet also at the Lake Side Inn. We will feature a huge “Flea Market”, a record number of “Jersey Skiffs, Sunnyland Chapter Ships Store, Amphicars, the Antique Out Board Motor Club, Land Displays, Boats for Sale and a beautiful collection of “Woodie” cars.

The entire show is run with volunteers and committee’s and when the show is at full steam, we have over 100 people working in different areas. One of the more unique things we offer is the “Valet Service” for the boat trailers. When you arrive at our show, you are directed to a Marshalling area where you prepare you boat to be launched. A member of the Tractor Crew will unhook your boat from the towing vehicle; You can park you vehicle in one of the many parking lots and meet you boat at the ramp; Once the launch is complete, we store your trailer until you are ready to depart the show. Our process is very refined and works very smooth. We provide this service so you can enjoy you time on the lake and not have to worry about trailer parking and retrieval.

Our antique boating event has a major economic impact on the community and we are working with the three surrounding cities, Tavares, Mount Dora and Eustis. All hotels, restaurants and filling fast and this year we are working the Merchants Association in Mount Dora. All store owners will participate in an antique fair and the streets will be filled with vendors and exhibits.

This year, we will offer a discount ticket for all participants to ride the train or the water Taxis to and from Mount Dora. Eustis vendors will also be in full swing.
The Sunnyland Chapter of the ACBS takes great pleasure in welcoming you to the 2009 Boat Festival. Our move to Wooten Park has given us an opportunity to expand the show footprint and each year we will continue to grow. Last year the city of Tavares provided new floating docks and in order to re-coup some of the investment, we are charging a nominal fee of $5.00 per person on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If you have the time and you want to be entertained, you are welcome to come and watch us set up the show on Thursday Mar 27.

I would be remiss if I did not mention that we run this entire event with volunteers. Most of the workers are from the Sunnyland Chapter, but we have many folks who travel long distances to attend the show and manage to help in some fashion. The City of Tavares has rolled out the “Red Carpet” and will be there in force to insure a smooth operation.

Please join us for the 2009 Antique Boat Festival Mar 27-29, 2009 on Lake Dora at Wooten Park in Tavares
As you have been reading, the Boat Festival is now located in Tavares, Florida. Tavares is very close to Mount Dora and is located on Lake Dora. The Festival will be held on Thursday through Sunday, March 27 – 30.

In summary, we are planning to bring a new experience to all who attend the Festival. This new venue will truly be a “festival” as we will be featuring antique and classic boats on display for the general public but also woody cars, Amphicars, and antique outboard motors along with a wide variety of exhibitors that support our mission. We hope that you enjoy your experience at the new Sunnyland Festival and look forward to seeing you in Tavares in late March.

All The Bridges Are Closed. Thank God For Water Taxi's

It's like a hurricane has come through Northern Virginia. All the back roads are empty. Buses every were. The Metro stops are all packed. Starting at 2 AM. Folks are walking miles to meet on the mall and watch TV screens in the cold. All the bridges are shut down. It's crazy, and yet very exciting. One way that people are getting across the river is.... Water Taxi.. Yup. Old school pre bridge travel...Happy Inauguration Day! Let's get on with it, and get this economy going... Hopefully before classic boating season...

Another Barrel Back On eBay... Why I Otta!!!

What nerve. Here I am trying to sell my beloved fully restored show quality 1941 19 ft.Barrel Back, trying to make it seem so rare, and dang! Here comes another one on eBay.. click here. A nice one to boot.....Double Dang! But wait... It needs a complete restoration, thank god. If you look closer you will find the boat is for sale from Absolute Classics Marine in Canada. And they have a $49,000 price on it. I suppose that is Canadian dollars. So you need to do that conversion. This boat is a 1940, so it has the very cool windshield and different bow. I have found that Chris Craft Barrel Back lovers fall into two camps. 1938-40 and 1941-42.. The looks are different. Both breath taking. One more deco than the other, and one more stream lined. So with that said. Since they had the nerve to wonder into my sales week. I will now use it to sell mine... Seems fare! Lets say you get a steal on that 1940 Barrel. You get it for 30K... Merican Dollars that is.. The good green kind. Nothing with a Queen on them in tooty frooty colors.... OK looks like it will need an engine, 6K. - Bottom 35K and that is cheap... While your in there. you will find frames and other rotten stuff. 10K - These numbers will be debated for sure, but the truth here... I just went through this. Looks like you will want to install a correct leather interior. 8K. - Gages 2K - Varnish strip and stripe 6K,- OK now you are close. But things will still need to be done. lets say 5K... Lets add that up OK.... 110,000.... Thats the real number. Now, if you want to do a ton of work yourself, it's a good deal. Note. I spent over 1000 hrs alone on mine. Look around, 3 year and 4 year restorations are all to common. With one click... ONE CLICK HERE you can skip all that hell ( OK it's kinda fun... Egh... It's a ton of fun... But may not be for you )....and start winning shows while saving $25,000.... That's a another boats worth for gods sake.

UPDATE. BIDDING STOPPED AT $17,000 That seems tragically about right considering the times. Egh, what a great boat, and good folks to buy it from.
WAKE UP MERICA
! There's deals out there that you will kick your self one day for not buying.

Need To Warm Up.... Two Words...Fire Wood!

Thank god for the warmth of my computer. Once again eBay is creating entertainment for us all. This weekends special. Firewood! A very well known 1935 Dodge Watercar. Ohhhhhhhh! Dang, again. This is an amazing boat.. The trailer is worth the price alone... Here is the description as stated in the listing. Click to go to it.

1935 Dodge Model 103 17 foot Gentlemen’s Runabout.

One of seven built, One of two known to exist.

This Boat is the only one still operational and seaworthy the other is a basket case
Formed in 1923 by Horace Dodge Jr., In Newport News Virginia the Dodge boat company has a brilliant and vivid history until it closed in 1935. Dodge Jr. chose to leave the automobile making tradition of his family to bring to market an affordable boat to the masses. Steeped with a life time of boat racing dating back to the first gold cup in 1904 Horace Dodge Jr. incorporated much of his racing knowledge into his pleasure craft.

Dodge chose to make each hull from African mahogany. Although more expensive and stronger wood that the traditional Philippine mahogany that other boat builder of the era was using. The construction of the Dodge Water Cars as they were known in the day was meticulous. After having a good run in business in the late 20's and early 30's the height of the depression and poor management of the business the dodge boat company closed it's door in 1936. A very small number of Dodge boats were produced in 1936. 1935 marked the end of the dual cockpit runabouts.

This beautiful concurs and "best of show" restored 17 foot gentlemen's racing runabout, model 103 is one of two known to exist. Of the seven built this runabout is number 103 or the third boat in this model series. This particular boat has been restored to its original glory with all original as built at the factory parts including the power plant.
The other known boat is un-restored condition and missing the original power plant and most detail parts last known location was Newport News VA.

The model 103 was an expensive boat for the day selling at a base price of $945.00 only the very wealthy could afford this luxury and quality.

This boat is a dual front to back cockpit pit design with the engine located in the center of the hull. It rides very nicely and is extremely stable in in calm and ruff water conditions.
At 17 feet it is powered by the original Dodge Grey marine 60 horse power engine. Completely rebuilt to factory specifications this runabout will cruise along at a respectable 32 Miles per hour. The in and out forward and reverse gearbox is smooth and precise.

The hull was completely dismantled and lovingly restored over 4 years to its current condition. Modern technology was used to seal the hull. The accepted practice of using a flexible polymer sealant between the double hull provides superior sealing over the laminated canvas as used during original construction.
The restoration is remarkable! The impeccable craftsmanship and attention to detail shows throughout the boat.

Incorporated is the specific attention to detail and correctness right down to the Duesenberg 4 spoke steering wheel. A feature incorporated only by Dodge Watercar Company.
This is a nautical piece of history it is the only one in the world! The sale includes the custom built trailer which rides in the original trailers wooden wheels. 4 wheels in total (2) spare mounted on the front frame support. I have towed this boat from Nevada to Seattle without issue. The trailer with Boat tows easily and true.

Complete photo documentation of the restoration is included in the sale. Full waterline cover is included as well as a different pitch propeller.

It's 20 Below In Some Parts of Woody Boaterville. But Thanks To Jim Wangard's Photos It's Toasty On Your Desk Top!

It's cold as all get out, out there. I have always wondered why the world stopped shooting Classic Boat Babes. At what point did that become passe? What in the H-E-Double hockey Sticks were we thinking! Everyone benefits - We the viewer like it, the photographer likes it, and the models get there face all over the place. It's a win win win.. Thanks to Jim Wangard, he stuck to his guns and has kept clicking away. The Wangards are a great asset to the classic Boating community. Wait, they are the classic boat community. You can see there art on a regular basis in Classic boating magazine and countless Books, and Calenders. Kinda like the Rupert Murdoch's of the classic boat world. Enjoy....

Woody Boat Of The Month. 1936 Chris Craft Utility. 1 of 3

This unusual utility was custom built for Jay Smith when he was president of Chris Craft. There were three "Angler" boats this being the second. These three boats were very unique in that they were the only 21 foot boats produced with twin engines. The reason? Fear of breaking down. IF one engine goes out you have a backup... I love this boat for it's history and just plain simple design. It truly defines the term Utility... The decks are different. And this one of course for sale like everything else these days. Click here to see more.

1941-19 ft Barrel Back On eBay... Hey Wait, Thats My Boat!

As many of you know I have been dancing around this for about a year. It's listed at Antique boat Center, been on the Trading Dock, and I just kinda was half hearted about selling her. But after Thayer IV went on the market and I was unable to move...I realized it was time to make something happen. So she is now on eBay.. click here.. and will be sold to someone that wants a good deal. The reserve is below what most would sell this boat for on any given day. My heart is in a different place than my wallet... So bid away.

1947 Chris Craft Rocket On eBay For All You Painted Woody Lovers

I love these little Chris Crafts. Here is chance to go painted woody boating for little money.... I hope...Click Here! This one looks like it has all it's history to back it up, that's good. It's something different. That's good. Now, According to page 133 of Jerry Conrad's book. The Essential Guide To Chris Crafts. Considered the go to for factoids. This boat would have come with a red interior. Also a sticker on the side of a very cool rocket, and 415 of them were made in the year 1947. The owner claims it to be 1 of 40. NOW hold on! The owner may be right. This is the charm of these boats. Chris Craft would do whatever the owner wanted. White interior. OK, Pez dispenser in the engine compartment. No... Only because Pez had not been invented yet! Ask the owner. He has the delivery photo of the boat. That will tell the story. These quirky things might also explain the 1 out of 40 number. And in the end... who gives a crap. It's a very cool boat. Here is a shot of a perfect one on Mitch Lapoints site.
