Dear God, It's A Heat Wave Here On The Northern Neck Of Virginia.

73 degrees. Even my neighbor was out and about this weekend. Some of them leave there boats in the water all winter. This neighbor actually takes his boat to work across the creek every day to his boat yard. I actually have some sun burn. Dang that feels good. Also went by to look at a tasty 1930's Elco cruiser. It's smaller than the others I have seen. It's size of 30 feet make it almost right for me, but I am holding out of a bigger Chris Craft as a permanent guest house at the cottage. If you are interested this one is for sale. Click on Wino signs on the right side. The hull is very sound, with many new parts. Even has a newer engine. The other great thing this weekend. Low gas prices. Dang Dang, makes me want to dig a pit in my back yard and hord gas!

On Golden Pond Boat For Sale On eBay!

Here we go again you say. Here it is Click here...Another one. But this one seems like it might be a real one if what the guy says checks out. See below...Subtle things, deck vent... very odd, The set shots have the vent near the windshield and on this boat the vent is on the hatch cover, but on the video clip from the movie it has the vent like this. And then two vents. So they must have moved it around. The snaps on the windshield though line up. The seller says he has all the documentation. Currently I have an email into him. This is making me sick. I want a U22 and this would be a good one to have. I just need to unload the Barrel Back. Ugh! UPDATE 12/30/08 Story on-line from StarTribune.com on the sale. Click Here.

NEW UPDATE 12/31/08 3PM Reserve Of 40K has been met .. this boat is going to sell. So act fast if you are interested.

Woody Boater Of The Month. Dale Kocian Of Kocian Intruments.

It's that time of year. You have everything in place for the launch of your classic boat in the spring. And you need to get the gauges done. But, as you start shopping around, you come to find that it can take up to a year to get the gauges done. And in one case you find a bitter person on the other end of the line telling you what a pain it is, and yada yada. Not with Dale Kocian. In fact he could not be more helpful and fast. With amazing show quality work, and 100% satisfaction. Dale will be able to deliver your shiny new gauges in 2 weeks to 90 days, Depending on work load and need. I had my gauges done and Dale was amazing. I also see him at all the major shows. And it's a joy to just sit and chat. He is a true positive asset to the Classic boat hobby. So next big show, stop by and say hi. www.ccgauges.com

Woody Babe Of The Month

Is it just me? Thanks to Joel Lemanski and Classic Boat Hardware, we are blessed with the only form of T & A left in the classic boat community. Babes and boats were a mainstay of classic boat advertising. Yet these days we only focus on the varnish. Maybe it's our age? For the record, I aint dead yet, bring on the babes! So starting this month, Woody Boater will be on the hunt for Woody Babes of the month. I figured let's start with the one we all know so well. For some reason it wouldn't be the same if it was a photo. It's all about the dream I suppose.

Pardon My Wake Of Words. I Got Somth'n To Say!

I found this decal on the web. Somehow I made a connection. Sometimes while writing this journal I feel like this guy. Racing through the hobby, creating havoc in my wake of rants and comments. For the record. I love it. This hobby needs a place that it can express it's point of view, good or bad. The last posting on the Edison Electric Boat was a classic case. It started out as a positive story. I like the boat and applaud the folks at Edison for trying something different. That's of course how power boating started. But boy oh boy. The comments started coming in and by email. The email ones a tad more brutal. Bring it on I say. Same with the ACBS story. That one really hit a nerve. And hopefully will be addressed by the ACBS. They've got issues for sure. I also am looking back at Joe Martell. Man that was fun. Hope to see him again. So here is to commenting and letting loose. Keep 'm coming.

Electric Classic Boats. Dear God, What's Next?

Whats next is the whole point I suppose. It's all about saving fossil fuel and the planet so there is a whats next. The folks at Edison Marine have pulled it off. This is a 30Mph rocket. Can last up to 8 hrs on one charge.... OK it's only cruising at 5 mph doing that. But... And if you run out of juice, there aint no old geezer in a fish'n boat gonna be able to help. But that's not the point. It's about being cool and earth friendly. I love this. Now if you don't mind, I need to go to work... in my electric Porsche Speedster..

And everything in between. This has not happened before in my short memory. There are usually two or three out there. So, you get to pick and choose and haggle if you find two that are the same. You could say, that shopping for a Barrel Back these days is like shooting fish in a ....... Sorry. It was right there, just looking for a set up. There are some on Craigs List and others around that I know about. I wonder if there are more now for sale than at any one time when they were making them. Either way, this is still a smart investment.

Boat U.S Recomends Filling Your Gas Tank For Storage.

As you may recall we did a story on this very issue back in Sept. The story was on making sure we all used fuel stabilizer for Ethanol additives. This is a reminder as to why, plus a tip to keep your tank full. The story is dated in Sept as well. But worth reading and running out to the barn. What a pain. That darn corn. Sure it's great with butter on it. But in my gas tank! Ugh!

The Problem with Ethanol Fuel: Phase Separation

Ethanol-laden gasoline, dubbed "E-10" for its 10% ethanol content, is now commonplace at marina fuel docks across the country. However, as winter approaches and boaters lay up their vessels for the season, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatU.S.) has some recommendations to ensure that spring commissioning will go smoothly. That's because E-10 can phase separate, or form two separate solutions in the gas tank - water and fuel - over a long winter storage period. Once this happens, the engine may not run and internal damage can occur.

BoatU.S. has these recommendations for storing boats fueled with E-10 this winter:

· Top Off: For boats with built-in gas tanks, stop at the fuel dock and top off the tank before you haul out, leaving it nearly full with just a little room for expansion. A tank that is almost full limits the flow of air into and out of the vent, which reduces the chance of fluctuating temperatures adding condensation (water) to the fuel, inviting phase separation. Anglers who fish over the winter should also top off their boat's gasoline tanks between outings to prevent condensation. Draining built-in fuel tanks of E-10 gas, while completely eliminating any chances of phase separation, is not practical and potentially dangerous.

• Freshening doesn't work: Midwest marina owners, who have dealt with E-10 for many years, report that phase separation typically occurs when boats are stored with tanks only one-quarter to one-half full, which cannot be remedied by adding fresh gasoline in the spring. Once E-10 phase separates, the water will remain at the bottom of the tank.

• Additive issues: With any fuel that sits in a tank for a long time, it's important to add a stabilizer. But stabilizers do not prevent phase separation. Once it occurs, additives and water separators can't help. The only remedy is to have the gas and ethanol/water professionally removed from the tank.

Fiberglass tanks beware: Ethanol is known to chemically react with many fiberglass fuel tanks, which can cause them to deteriorate and potentially fail. Unfortunately, unless your boat's manufacturer can confirm that your fiberglass tank was built to withstand ethanol, your only remedy may be to replace the tank with a non-reactive material such as aluminum.

Let it breathe: While ethanol does attract moisture, never try to plug up a fuel tank vent to prevent moist air from entering a tank. Without room to expand, the additional pressure could rupture fuel system components.

· Portable gas tanks: Any un-mixed gas (without 2-cycle oil) remaining in portable tanks may be carefully poured into your automobile gas tank. However, if you do have to store gas over the winter in a portable tank, keep the tank out of the sun and in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources, keeping in mind that gasoline fumes are heavier than air. Recent BoatU.S. Foundation tests of portable jerry jugs confirmed that over time, gasoline can evaporate through the walls of some plastic containers.

The good news: Next spring when you start the boating season you will already have a tank full of last year's gas, likely saving yourself some money on a fill up.
